Electronics Recycling after the Holidays

Dec 26, 2018

If Santa Claus brought you a bright and shiny new computer, laptop, tablet or cell phone for Christmas, you probably have an old device to get rid of.

When it comes to disposing of used electronics, there are a few option in Sioux Falls, but be careful! Follow these tips to safely and securely recycle your electronics:

  • Don’t throw electronics in the trash. Any data you don’t want falling into the wrong hands is up for grabs if you toss devices into the garbage. Dumpster divers are notorious for finding old computers or phones and pulling out data like credit card info, social security numbers, or other personally identifiable information. Electronics also have many different types of metals, plastics, and potential toxins that will eventually breakdown and leach into our groundwater and land if they end up in the landfill. Recycling or reusing these devices is the best way to get rid of them. SECURITY TIP: Don’t leave boxes out on your curb showcasing what fancy, new electronics you received. This is an easy way for thieves to identify good targets.
  • Don’t throw electronics in the recycling bin. The recycling bin is not meant for electronic devices. Most curbside programs only accept paper, plastics, cardboard and metal – NOT electronics. Electronics cause sorting and contamination issues at recycling plants and are very dangerous in transit. Batteries can ignite, starting huge fires that put drivers or facility workers in harm’s way. E-waste should only be handled by specialized recyclers who are trained to package, handle and process electronic devices.
  • Do bring household electronics to the HHW facility. In Sioux Falls, residents in the 5-county area can bring ewaste to the Household Hazardous Waste facility  for recycling, free of charge. All equipment collected there is sent to SEAM, which means any remaining data is wiped or shredded in accordance with SEAM’s data security certifications. If you live outside the 5-county area, check with your city for local e-recycling options.
  • Do bring business electronics to SEAM. SEAM accepts electronics from businesses as well as residential devices that may have been rejected at the City’s HHW facility. Businesses can either schedule a pickup for their IT equipment or drop off electronics right at SEAM’s dropoff door. All equipment is secured once it enters the facility and data is either shredded or wiped in accordance with data security certifications. All equipment is handled in accordance with the highest environmental, health and safety standards in the industry to protect the environment and public health.
