FAQs
Use the expandable list below to find answers to SEAM’s Frequently Asked Questions.
Electronics & Recycling
What electronics do you accept?
SEAM accepts most business IT equipment including desktops, laptops, servers, monitors, printers, phones, networking gear, batteries, and media devices.
See our Accepted Items List for details. If you’re unsure, contact us and we’ll advise the safest, most secure option.
Are there fees for certain items?
Yes. Some equipment, such as CRT monitors or TVs, require labor-intensive or hazardous processing and carry a per-pound fee. These fees ensure responsible, audited recycling and prevent unsafe export or landfill disposal.
Do you recycle batteries and bulbs?
Yes. SEAM processes all types of batteries and most fluorescent and HID bulbs. Special packaging is required — see our Battery Guide and Bulb page for details.
What happens after my equipment is collected?
Equipment is tracked with SEAM’s secure system, SEAMlink. Hard Drives and/or Solid State Drives are wiped or shredded according to NIST 800-88r1 standards, then equipment is either remarketed (if functional and secure) or responsibly recycled through audited downstream partners. You’ll receive Certificates of Destruction and/or Recycling for compliance proof. See process details.
Data Destruction & Security
How do you destroy data?
Shredding: Hard drives and media destroyed with industrial shredders (see details).
Wiping: Drives are securely sanitized using NIST 800-88r1 compliant software with forensic verification (see details).
Onsite or Offsite: Services available at your location or within SEAM’s secure facility (see details).
Do you provide documentation?
Yes. Certificates of Recycling are issued for every job. Certificates of Destruction and detailed, item-level reports are also available for audit and compliance needs. See details.
Can you shred hard drives at my location?
Yes. SEAM’s onsite destruction services allow you to witness drives being destroyed before they leave your custody. See details.
Is your process audited?
Yes. SEAM undergoes multiple annual third-party audits and unannounced inspections. Our certifications require strict adherence to global standards for security, environmental responsibility, and quality. See details.
Pickup & Logistics
Do you offer equipment pickup?
Yes. SEAM operates a secure fleet of GPS-tracked trucks across South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and beyond. For clients with locations outside of our core service area, SEAM can extend coverage to meet your needs. We handle everything from small office pickups to large-scale data center decommissioning. See details.
Do you provide collection containers?
Yes. Lockable security carts and bins are available for your site to safely store equipment until pickup or destruction. See details.
Can I drop off equipment?
Yes. Businesses and residents can drop off electronics at our Sioux Falls facility (check drop-off hours). See location details.
Compliance & Certification
Are you certified?
Yes. SEAM is the only certified IT asset disposition (ITAD) provider in the Dakotas. We hold globally recognized certifications for security, environmental responsibility, and quality management. See our Certifications.
Why do certifications matter?
With no federal regulation governing ITAD, certifications are the only reliable way to verify a vendor’s claims. Our certifications prove compliance with strict security and environmental standards and provide customers with verifiable proof of responsible handling. See our Certifications.
What regulations do you help with?
SEAM’s processes support compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, PCI DSS, GLBA, SOX, NIST 800-88r1, and other requirements. Documentation and reporting are audit-ready for your industry. See supported industries and regulations.
Value Recovery & Remarketing
Can I get value back for my old equipment?
Yes. If assets still hold value and in good condition, SEAM can securely wipe and refurbish them for resale. Revenue sharing or remarketing credits may be available. See details.
What if I don’t want my devices resold?
That’s fine — many customers choose complete shredding. We follow your requirements and provide Certificates of Destruction if you choose to go with shredding services.
Why Recycle or Resell with SEAM?
Can’t I just throw old electronics in the trash?
No. In Sioux Falls and many other communities, it’s illegal to landfill electronics. Most contain hazardous materials that can leach into soil and water. Recycling also recovers valuable resources.
Why not just sell my equipment to a broker?
Unverified buyers often strip out value and improperly dump the rest, leaving your organization liable for data breaches or environmental violations. With SEAM, every device is handled securely, with full documentation.
What makes SEAM different?
We’re not just a recycler. We’re a certified ITAD partner, independently audited for security, compliance, and sustainability. With SEAM, you get local service backed by global standards, protecting your business every step of the way. See more.
